Computed Tomography » How do I prepare for my CT scan? |
Computed TomographyA CT scan, also called CT, computed tomography or CAT scan is based on X-ray and produces images of your internal organs that are more detailed than those produced by conventional X-ray exams. The difference between X-ray and CT scans is that X-rays use a stationary beam to produce 2-dimensional images of your body, while a CT scan rotates around your body to create a 3-dimensional, or volumetric image of your body. Your physician can then look at either 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional image reconstructions of any part of your body. A CT scan provides more detailed information of “soft tissues” in your body by reconstructing the images taken from multiple directions. Therefore, a CT scan can reveal bones as well as organs in your body, including the pancreas, adrenal glands, kidneys, and blood vessels. A CT scan carries a higher dose of radiation, and therefore your physician may only use an X-ray for certain cases, including bone fractures. In many cases, however, a CT scan is necessary to make an accurate diagnosis. These cases include muscle and bone disorders, tumors, monitoring the progress of cancer or heart disease, detection of internal injuries, and other conditions. Although CT scans carry the risk of radiation exposure, they are useful in certain patients who cannot receive an MRI. These include patients with pacemakers, defibrillators, and other medical devices that may be implanted. (For more detailed information please see our section on MRI). If you think you may be pregnant: If you think you may be pregnant or are actively trying to get pregnant, you should discuss this with your physician. You may be better suited for an examination that does not carry the risk of radiation, which can be very harmful to a baby. |
